Dr. Chantell L. McDowell, a Brooklyn, NY native, served more than 8 years in public libraries. She serves as the Collection Development Librarian & Instructional Technology Coordinator working to assist with managing the operation of the library; providing leadership for all aspect of collection development and management to meet current and emerging information needs. Dr. McDowell works with librarians in assessing the collection to support the curriculum and instructional needs of faculty and oversees special detailed technology projects. She manages the faculty Information Sandbox proving training for infusing technology in the classroom. Dr. McDowell is also the subject liaison for the departments of Interdisciplinary Studies, Philosophy and Religion & Visual and Performing Arts within the College of Arts and Letters.
Prior to joining the JCSU team Dr. McDowell worked as Director and Coordinator of Youth Services at Worcester Public library in Massachusetts. She also served as Library Media Specialist (Middle School Librarian) in the Charlotte Mecklenburg School District and as Lead Teen Services Librarian at Charlotte Mecklenburg Library. Dr. McDowell began her career at the Brooklyn Public Library where she worked for years as a Senior Young Adult Librarian.
She graduated from the State University of New York at Old Westbury with a Bachelor in Media and Communications, received a Master in Information and Library Science from Pratt Institute. Dr. McDowell, holds a Doctorate in Organizational Leadership from Franklin University, with a dissertation titled, “Improving Reading And Technology Skills In At Risk Teens Through Librarian-Led Mentoring Activities: An Action Research Study”, which highlights the significance of librarians and the services for teens at risk. She has authored a nonfiction book called, “Serving At-Risk Teens: Proven Strategies and Programs for Bridging the Gap” which highlights how libraries and communities can work together to find new ways to serve at risk youth.
